Network Project for RNPTBA Members

The Vision of the RNPTBA is to establish a professional network that supports serving, transitioning, and retired members of the Royal Navy Physical Training Branch Association. To create a network tailored specifically for RNPTBA members, we must carefully consider their unique backgrounds, experiences, and the challenges they face during transition. This network will facilitate valuable connections, providing guidance and support as members navigate their careers, ensuring they have the resources they need to thrive both during and after their service.

Why we feel we need to create a network?

While the Royal Navy provides resettlement support for service leavers, as a Physical Training Instructor (PTI), you belong to a unique group with a diverse skill set that many employers value. PTIs typically have high confidence, but transitioning to civilian life can be challenging, and your service title may not hold the same weight outside the military. Your Association is here to support you through this transition. We leverage the experiences and networks of both retired PTIs and your peers to help you access new opportunities. Together, we can ensure you find pathways that align with your skills and aspirations as a member of our community.

The Pathway

Understanding Veteran Needs – We need to recognise that RNPTBA members may have specific needs and challenges related to their transition from military to civilian life. These may include adjusting to a new work culture, translating military skills to civilian roles, and navigating the job market.

Member Friendly Mentoring Program – Ensure that the mentoring program is designed to be inclusive and supportive of RNPTBA members. This will involve providing support via mentors who have military experience or who have undergone training to understand the needs of military veterans.

Partnerships with Military Veteran Organisations – Collaboration with veteran organisations, such as veterans’ associations, military support groups, or government employers, to access resources, expertise, and potential support for the member community.

Transition Assistance – Offer mentoring support focused on helping members navigate the transition process effectively. This could include CV writing, interview preparation, networking strategies, and understanding civilian workplace norms.

Support for Mental Health and Well-being – Recognize that some members may be dealing with mental health challenges, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or transition-related stress. Provide access to resources and support services, including counselling and peer support groups.

Career Development and Advancement – Offer mentoring to help members identify career goals, develop new skills, and explore opportunities for career advancement. This could include guidance on education and training programs, professional certifications, and entrepreneurship.

Flexibility and Accessibility – Recognise that members may have commitments or obligations related to their military service or personal circumstances. Provide flexible mentoring and networking arrangements, such as virtual meetings or asynchronous communication, to accommodate their needs.

Feedback and Continuous Improvement – Solicit feedback from veterans participating in the mentoring program to assess its effectiveness and identify areas for improvement. Use this feedback to refine the programme and ensure that it continues to meet the evolving needs of veterans.

By considering these factors and tailoring the mentoring network program to the specific needs of members, we will provide valuable support to help members successfully transition to civilian life and thrive in their post-military careers.
